Las Colinas Hosts Strategic Links Golf School

by Dave Bisbee on April 20, 2011

DSC01731Last week I was in Dallas, Texas to conduct a Strategic Links Executive Golf School at Las Colinas Country Club. Other than the fact that it was so windy the birds were walking… the participants had a great time learning some things about themselves and at the same time improving their golf game. I was joined by my long time associate and CEO of Strategic Solutions International Connie Charles as co-facilitator of the program.

Where Business Golf Begins

The EGS is designed to take executives through a day long experience that includes delving into the unique characteristics of their own personalities through the introduction of their Personal Golf Profile. The profile is generated by the Birkman, a personality assessment used by many Fortune 500 companies to help them develop, motivate, and manage individuals by understanding their strengths and providing them tools and environments to leverage those strengths.

So what the heck does this have to do with golf? Well… the same elements which define your unique personality… that make you you, tag along into anything you do. The same things that make you successful in business can make you successful in golf. The same things that cause you stress in business will cause you stress in golf.

This program simply moves back a forth across that line. Golf, probably like no other sport or activity, allows for the kind of introspection and interaction that is relatable to business situations.

Group Dynamics Explored

We had a pretty diverse group of business golfers that came from companies around the DFW Metroplex. The day started with an introduction by Doug Dowd of SSI and the distribution of the work books… did I mention that this is work mixed with some fun? Once we introduced the people to their profiles the ahh hahs began to happen.

The Birkman really captures with amazing accuracy the essential characteristics of each persons personality by revealing what kinds of things give them energy and by contrast what drains them of energy. Also the profile describes how a person prefers to approach tasks and get things done as in direct and forceful or more thoughtful collaborative. We then take this new level of self understanding out to the practice tee where we begin to work on the golfer within the businessDSC01706 person.

Golf School Plays Key Role

My counterpart for the golf instruction segment was Eben Dennis, Director of Instruction at Las Colinas. The group went through a little over 3 hours of instruction covering everything from the driver to the putter. We incorporate the elements of each persons profile into the golf instruction paying attention to communication styles and helping them process the experience of changing their golf swing mechanics and developing new skills.

We then relate this “outdoor experience” to what happens in the business environment when they have to develop new skill sets or change the way they do things. There is the inevitable period of discomfort as they get used to the new grip or change in set-up and the struggle with getting results with their new swing… but soon enough the results improve and the new and improved golfer emerges… a little dramatic but you get the picture.

The connection is made that improvement in anything involves managing yourself through the uncomfortable phase and to do that you need to have a clear understanding of self. The profile makes this crystal clear and gives the participants a map to follow to always get the results they want by leveraging their strengths and managing their reactions when things go wrong.

Everyone leaves the EGS with a new sense of self understanding and maybe a few blisters. I always leave with a bunch of new friends and the anticipation of going to the next town to do this all over again… Atlanta you are next on the agenda. See you there.
